The Twelve Signs

The following are the characteristics of the Western Zodiac signs as understood by astrologers. Astrologers consider each of the signs to represent an ideal type. In other words, no individual shows all of the characteristics of any one sign. Rather each person is a combination of many signs, which must be assessed as a whole in that person's horoscope or natal chart.

The twelve signs are divided into the four classical elements of ancient Greek philosophy and science, i.e. fire, earth, air and water.
Fire is commonly associated with the qualities of energy, assertiveness, and passion. Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are the signs of the element Fire.
Earth is commonly associated with qualities of practicality, restraint and materialism. It was also associated with the physical, sensual aspects of life. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are the signs of the element Earth.
Air is considered to be both hot and wet. The ancient Greeks used two words for air: aer meant the dim lower atmosphere, and aether meant the bright upper atmosphere above the clouds. Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius are the signs of the element Air.
Water is one of the four classical elements in ancient Greek philosophy and science. It was commonly associated with the qualities of emotion and intuition. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are the signs of the element Water.

The twelve signs are also divided into three qualities: cardinal, mutable and fixed.
A Cardinal Sign (also known as a moveable sign) is a sign of the zodiac that initiates a change of temperate zone season when the Sun makes its annual passage into them. The word "cardinal" originates from the Latin word for "hinge," since they each mark the turning point of a temperate season. They were called moveable by traditional astrologers because the "air" changes when the Sun enters each of these signs, bringing a change of season. These signs are considered forceful and dynamic, initiating action and providing leadership. On the other hand, cardinal signs can be inconsiderate, controlling, stubborn, selfish and demanding, as they feel their way is the best and that others should follow. Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn are cardinal signs.

The Mutable Signs (also called common signs, bicorporal or double-bodied signs) are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. The mutable signs straddle two temperate zone seasons, encompassing an inherent duality in their symbolism. They are associated with change and versatility. Individuals born under the four mutable quality signs are thought to be adaptable, impressionable, sharp, sympathetic, communicative, resourceful and restless, with a gift for seeing both sides of a situation at the same time and an immense desire for knowledge, variety and new ideas. They supposedly adapt very well to new situations, possess much flexibility, seldom have any particular agenda and are perfectly happy to fill in an assigned role. However, they are also said to be inconsistent, changeable, nervous, indecisive and irresponsible, with a tendency to get wrapped up in tiny particulars.

Fixed Signs are at the height of the four seasons. Fixed Signs are associated with stamina, perseverance and strength and said to be, by nature, inert. However, they are also associated with inflexibility. Individuals born under the four Fixed Signs of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius are thought to be determined, powerful, natural leaders, purposeful, reliable, loyal and self-confident but also occasionally stubborn and immovable, with a tendency to get stuck in ruts. They supposedly pursue their goals with dogged persistence and have a great powers of concentration. Fixed Signs tend to direct their energies inward rather than outward.
